The Desert Species Preservation Center (DSPC) is launching an urgent fundraising initiative to acquire Parcel 5—a 40.15-acre, sanctuary along the Virgin River in Bunkerville, Nevada. This remarkable piece of land offers everything needed to become a secure and permanent home for rescued and endangered desert species.

What Is Parcel 5?

Parcel 5 is located within the NW¼ of the NW¼ of Section 13, Township 14S, Range 69E, in Clark County, Nevada.

  • 40.15 acres of biologically rich Mojave Desert
  • Bordered by 8-foot game fencing—ready for large-animal enclosures
  • Contains Virgin River water rights with a legal point of diversion
  • Supports 8 irrigable acres, ideal for organic certification
  • Includes rare riparian habitat, essential for wildlife

Why This Matters

This land is more than just dirt and fence lines—it’s a keystone habitat for desert life and a lifeline for our zoo’s mission. By acquiring Parcel 5, DSPC will:

  • Provide a forever home for animals including; camels, alpaca, goats and desert tortoises
  • Restore native plant species and support pollinators like monarch butterflies
  • Create protected riparian zones for threatened fish and birds
  • Expand our animal-assisted therapy and conservation education programs
  • Support organic forage and land-based income streams for long-term sustainability

Your donation directly helps us protect and restore habitat for:
  • Mojave Desert Tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) – federally threatened
  • Southwestern Willow Flycatcher – endangered riparian bird
  • Virgin River Chub & Woundfin – rare endemic fish
  • Yuma Clapper Rail – marsh-dependent species
  • Monarch Butterflies – migrating pollinators
  • 9 migratory bat species – including the western yellow bat and pallid bat

Our Goal

$1.5 Million

We aim to raise $1.5 million to:

  • Acquire the property from the current owner
  • Launch habitat restoration and fencing enhancements
  • Create an attractive, educational botanical area with signage for the visiting public to learn and enjoy
  • Open the site to donors, volunteers, and conservation programs
